Born 1987 in central Europe (Germany) as son of teachers, arts have been quite a larger part of my life, though anybody telling me, that this would become my work and dedication someday – I would have declared that person insane , as a child I had awful struggles because of my damaged finger nerves, even playing music Instruments was almost impossible.
Beginning around the age of 16, I began to be active as musician with several instruments in several styles, which became the focus of my life for some years, until I had to give up my big dream of being a full time musician for my whole life – the struggles were too great.
For quite a few years, Flags and Banners were the center of my activities, you will recognize in the postings on this page. However, I had to close this chapter, back in 2016, as making a life by sewing flags turned out to be almost impossible without wrecking my body and personal life, I am thankful for the good memories I have from this time, but the struggles were too great (but this is not lament !)
In the second half of 2016, having been active in the research about bells for more than 10 years, and having worked on the restauration of bells (part time) for some years already, I began my own company : Ars Campana (www.arscampana.com) , we renovate and maintain existing bells, but we also make new bells by request – in 2018, we´re establishing a second workshop/foundry in Germany, plus we are making new bells cast on site at the customer´s place by request.
I am still involved in writing and performing music (just not for bread and butter) and occasionally I am making Flags also – though now for fun : )
Beside my daywork (which is more than just daywork to me) I am also teaching bellringing to interested people, I am the resident bellringer of the Coptic Church in Germany and I am the Prior of the Children of Quasimodo, a group of bellringers and bell researchers.
Thanks for reading, hope to hear from you someday!
Yours Julian J.Hoffmann
